The Installation “there’d be no crying” presents a group of miniature figures made from bread, which are accompanied by a looping sound-piece.
These creatures are ambiguous in their identities, somewhere between house spirits, ghosts and miniatures. They are caught in a moment of mundane activities, a perpetual celebration of the routine tasks that constitute everyday life.
“Repeat after us, the motions set in stone to ensure a life well lived. One, two, three and glad you’ll be to feel so cared for.”
Bread is a basic, domestic material that vibrates with metaphors and meaning. In general terms it represents the community and culture that reproduces itself through its routines and relations. While these ensure stability, for anyone who fails to align they can become restrictive and monstrous.
The work thus treads the line between serene nightmare and whimsical fairytale.
This work was produced during the Ubiskes3 residency and became part of the Wondrous Realms Festival.
